Events at 3 campuses mark National Coming Out Day

by Doreen Cudnik Wednesday, October 11 is National Coming Out Day. Do something to celebrate! Ohio State University, Youngstown State University, and Case Western Reserve University are hoping to raise awareness about National Coming Out Day by sponsoring events that will demonstrate the richness and diversity of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community to their campus communities.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance of YSU is sponsoring these events:

Monday, October 9

"Lesbian experiences in the coming out process," a panel discussion on specific issues followed by a question and answer session, Kilcawley Center, Ohio Room from 1 to 3 pm.

Tuesday, October 10

Movie in the Pub: Torch Song Trilogy, 11 am.

"Gay male experiences in the coming out process," a panel discussion on specific issues followed by a question and answer session, Kilcawley Center, Ohio Room. Wednesday, October 11 National Coming Out Day

Movie in the Pub: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, 10 am.

Special issues of the coming out process for gay, lesbian and bisexual youth, 12 to 1:30 pm.

YSU GALA and their friends meet at "the

rock" from 4 to 5 pm.

Movie in the Pub: Hate, Homophobia, and Schools, 5 pm.

Coming Out celebration in the pub with the high energy mixing of DJ Chris Arthur from Numbers, 7 to 11 pm.

Continue the celebration at Numbers II in Youngstown. No cover for anyone with a YSU student ID. 11 pm to close. Thursday, October 12

Open panel discussion on specific issues that African-American, Asian-American, American Indian brothers and sisters face in their coming out process, Kilcawley Center, Scarlet Room, 1 to 4 pm. Friday, October 13

Movie in the Pub: Among Friends, 11 am. Open discussion: "Out on Campus; Homophobia, Hate Crimes and Action," 1 to 3 pm, Kilcawley Center, Room 2068. Exhibits at Youngstown State: Published writings on the Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual lifestyle on display at the Kilcawley Bookstore.

An Information/Pride table will be open from 10 am to 3 pm each day in the Kilcawley Arcade, lower level.

Coming Out at OSU

The following National Coming Out Day events will take place at various locations on the campus of Ohio State University: Monday, October 2

Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Student Resource Fair, Ohio Union Stecker Lounge, 1739 North High Street. 5-7 pm.

Thursday, October 5

Before Stonewall, 09 Dulles Hall, 230 West 17th Avenue, 11:30 am. This documentary film portrays the history of the homosexual experience in America from the social experimentation of the Roaring 20s to the Stonewall riots.

A concert for the Akron-area community. Saturday, October 14, 1995 at 8:00 p.m.

$5.00 from a chorus member and through Advantix. $7.00 day of concert from any source and at the door.

The Chorus will present a wide range of music, from inspirational (pride) songs and Broadway show tunes, spirituals and contemporary works, to classical selections. What the Chorus can guarantee is excellent music and a fun time.

The Akron stop represents the first of many for the Chorus as it sings it's way to the GALA Festival (Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses) in Tampa in July 1996. The theme for this year's season is "We Sing the Dream."

Poet, singer coming to CWRU

Also, to recognize National Coming Out Day, two nationally recognized performers— Becky Birtha, writer and poet, and Pat Humphries, singer-songwriter-will be appearing in Cleveland October 9-11.

rican-American lesbian, mother, Quaker, Philadelphian, writer and poet." She has two collections of short stories out, For Nights Like This One and Lovers' Choice, and a collection of poetry, The Forbidden Poems. In addition, her work has been widely anthologized and performed. Birtha will be reading from her work on Tuesday, October 10 at 8:00 pm at the Thwing Center on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. Pat Humphries' moving songs and beautiful melodies address a range of social issues: peace, justice, lesbian-gay-bisexual civil rights, environmental awareness, women's issues, and the rights of working people. Her songs have been performed by Pete Seeger, Charlie King and others, and anthologized in publications such as Sing Out!, Rise Up Singing!, and A New View. The ninth annual Cleveland Couples Together Fall Hayride is scheduled for Saturday, October 7, from 5 to 11:00 pm. The event will be held at Boyert's Farm in Medina. Although Cleveland Couples Together is a social group for northern Ohio gay and lesbian couples, a hayride committee member stressed that the annual fall event is open to anyone who wants to attend. "The Hayride is open to everyone: gay, lesbian, couples, singles... anyone interested in a fun country hayride."

Throughout the evening, the Rainbow Wranglers will be teaching simple dances and showing how the pros do it by giving a few demonstrations. Country and contemporary dancing will continue through the evening. Campfires will be available for quiet

moments. Apple cider, coffee, donuts, a hot dog, a bag of chips, and a complimentary pumpkin are also included in the Hayride ticket price. Hayriders may also bring their own beer, coolers, or other alcoholic beverages.

Cleveland Couples Together reports that proceeds from past year's hayrides allowed the group to donate generously to community organizations. Tickets will be available at several locations; call 216-7347980 for an up-to-date list of them. Ticket price is $13 in advance only. Tickets will not be available at the door. Hoke to address Log Cabin

The Log Cabin Club of Northeast Ohio has invited Rep. Martin R. Hoke to meet with the lesbian, gay, and bisexual community. The evening with Hoke will take place on Thursday, October 5, 7:00 pm at Parker's Restaurant, 2801 Bridge Avenue in Cleveland's Ohio City area. Hoke will address the gathering followed by a question and answer period. Afterward, he will be available to mix and mingle with the crowd. Everyone is welcome, and Jack Power, vice president of the Republican organization said, "Be prepared for a lively evening." Parker Bosley will provide light refreshments, and a cash bar will be available. $25 donations will be accepted at the door to help defray the cost of the event.
